Fundraising

Fundraising events are a vital lifeline for the Hoplite, providing the financial resources that enable us to support our personnel. Beyond merely securing funds, these efforts raise public awareness for the exceptional, often invisible challenges they face. If you wish to raise money on behalf of the Hoplite or discuss any ideas, please get in touch.

Our promise to you

That’s why we make four promises to you:

Privacy

We will always respect your privacy.
We appreciate that your Will is personal to you and will keep anything you tell us confidential.

Understanding

We understand family and friends come first and promise to treat you, your family and next of kin with courtesy, compassion and respect.

Respect

We know that circumstances can change and we’ll understand if you decide to change your gift. We’ll always respect your decision.

Legacy of Care

We promise to use your gift carefully and cost-effectively – so that the impact of your generosity continues far into the future.

Leave a gift in your will

Leaving a gift in your Will to the Hoplite Fund is a personal, kind and generous decision, If you are able to leave a gift to us, large or small, you’ll be helping us reach and embrace our Armed Forces family in their time of need.

We recommend using a qualified professional, such as a solicitor, because they know the law and can help you consider every eventuality. It’s all too easy to make a mistake that could invalidate your Will and cause your family unnecessary distress and expense in the future.

Types of gifts

Pecuniary Legacy

A pecuniary legacy is a set amount of money left to the charity as part of your Will.

Unlike other types of legacies, such as specific legacies (a gift of a particular item) or residuary legacies (a share of what’s left of your estate after other gifts and expenses), pecuniary legacies offer clarity and certainty.

For example, you might include a clause in your Will that states, “I leave £10,000 to the Hoplite Fund.” This is a pecuniary legacy.

A pecuniary provides certainty for beneficiaries as it ensures that the recipient will receive a precise amount, regardless of fluctuations in the value of your estate.

This can provide financial security and reduce the risk of disputes whilst providing  a straightforward way to leave a specific sum to a charity.

It can also reduce the Inheritance Tax (IHT) liability on your estate, as charitable gifts are exempt from IHT.

Residuary Legacy

A residuary legacy is a gift of all or a percentage of your estate after other legacies and liabilities have been paid. This would mean that after all funeral costs, debts and liabilities are paid on an estate, the charity would be left a percentage of the amount that is left over.

The advantage of a residuary legacy, unlike the pecuniary gift, is that it holds its real value, regardless of inflation. A particularly popular way to leave a gift to a charity.

If you were to leave 10% or more of your residuary estate to charity and your estate was subject to inheritance tax, this would reduce the inheritance tax rate from 40% to 36%.

Specific Gifts

If the Hoplite Fund has been left a specific item such as a car, a medal collection, a stamp collection etc., In most cases, we would prefer that the item is sold, and the sale proceeds are paid over to us. However, each individual case is different, so before taking any action, please contact us. If we have been left property, land or shares please contact us.
